Girls are ditching dolls at younger ages than ever—often by their seventh birthday party, manufacturers say. Companies such as Disney and MGA Entertainment are coming out with dolls at heights of 18 to 21 inches this holiday season and designing them to look like pre-teens, not babies or adults. These dolls are meant to be played with as companions, to give modern girls a few more years of fantasy play.

Disney is rolling out 18-inch versions of five of its most popular movie princesses, including Tiana, Ariel, and Cinderella, in a line called Princess & Me; the dolls are seven inches taller than an 11-inch fashion doll like Barbie, and much taller than previous versions of the Disney Princess dolls, which ranged from 4 to 14 inches. Parents can buy a matching gown for their daughters to wear.

Companies are aiming the big dolls at 5- to 11-year-olds, with features designed to resemble their prospective owners'. Many take a cue from American Girl, Mattel Inc.'s popular line of historic dolls targeted at ages 8 and up. The dolls have a name, historic clothes, and they come with a book of historical fiction with the doll as the main character. They retail for $95 a pop, not including matching girl-size clothes, accessories or a lunch at an American Girl store cafe.
