when i start up the program, the arrow goes through a cycle of a bunch of
different colors instead of staying on the green arrow. what does this
mean?

When the arrow goes through a cycle of a bunch of different colors, it means there are mails in the queue and the server stays in sending mail state.

While the green arrow means the server has been started up, but the queue is empty, it stays in free state.
