The Royal Aircraft Factory designed the DH2 specifically to combat the Fokker Scourge of the early part of the Great War. Designed before the allies managed to capture an aircraft with interupter gear the problem of firing through the propeller arc was solved by placing the pilot and gun in front of the engine and propeller. This necessitated placing the tailplane on booms, and produced a most ungainly looking aircraft. Nevertheless the DH2 outperformed the Fokker EIII Eindekker at all altitudes, and managed to turn the tide of the war in the allies favour once more.
