SmartTrace is software that provides the easier way to trace your applications activity and allows to consolidate application logs such as error tracking, messages, debug strings and much more. It allows different kinds of your information representation including simple string trace, tables, charts, progress bars, custom defined controls.

It is a common situation when applications have to tell you something if something goes wrong; internal error or important event occured; whatever. There are many reasons when a program should report about such events.

Desktop programs can display a message on the screen, beep or cry in speakers. What about numerous services and background applications that work hard on your behalf. The smartest of them can write information into a file or a system event journal and you then can try to read all this jumble later (maybe too late!) string by string to figure out what, where and when.

Everybody understands that event tracing should be more advanced especially when we talk about complicated software systems, client/server technologies and distributed applications. And who says that the traced information can only be a bunch of strings? The real world requires something more advanced including sheets, charts, progress bars, or even some specail custom stuff. Never know what it may look like but it is better to provide a possibility for customers to display their information in that way as they would like to see it.

SmartTrace consists of three major components:

Trace Server is a backgound process that works as a Windows/NT/2000 service or a COM server. It receives trace information from user applications by means of Trace Agent and sends information to Trace Monitor programs.

Trace Monitor is a GUI desktop application that may connect to one or many Trace Servers using the DCOM technology and receives and displays trace information in a form customers expect to see it.

Trace Agent is a COM API module that can be mounted into your application and you will have a possibility to send information to a Trace Server as easy as write it to a file or a console.
