Two people that live together need only one microwave oven. If they live separately, they need two. It is in the interest of the economic production that they live separately. Not to bring together their destinies. To stay alone.
[...] Everything comes down to numbers. We work for numbers. We live for numbers. We die numbers.
[...] Breaking news on the radio. The danger of terrorist attacks has increased to some color. The safest areas are malls and supermarkets.
[...] No human contact. Like an Internet download.
[...] The results of a research that confirms that the depression can be controlled successfully with shopping.
[...] 1 trillion dollars annually in the military budgets. 3 billion people (half the population of the planet) live in poverty. 1 trillion dollars, the value of the first 100 world brands.
[...] The advertised suffering is appealing. It has death-appeal. The quiet suffering that surrounds you is repulsive.
[...] The most dangerous thing is to let people break free. From reality. From the reality of the products. From the reality of the consumption. From the reality of the career, of the money, of the problems and of the loneliness. They might get used to its not existing.

Excerpt
7:00 AM

'Inside the flat a fruity voice was reading out a list of figures which had something to do with the production of pig-iron.
[...] Winston turned a switch and the voice sank somewhat, though the words were still distinguishable. The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely.'

GEORGE ORWELL
1984, 1949
  • The perfect silence of the room is disturbed by professional voices spoken in alert rhythm.
  • It is now normal that instead of old alarm clocks or instead of music, one should be awaken by news programs.
  • They stopped manufacturing alarm clocks. They became obsolete.
  • All big electronics producers offer, instead of night table alarm clocks, devices that start broadcasting news at the programmed hour.
  • It is the new normality to be informed from the very moment you wake up.
  • Your device is not exactly the latest version, that is why you can only choose from 10.000 broadcasting stations (an annoying numeric limitation because of the electronic reasons of the older model).
  • The latest models have even a color display with a news bar where one can read the latest news, stock quotations, or the latest death tolls of the most recent terrorist attacks.
  • Some of the models that are more expensive, but that are in fashion nowadays, come with Internet access and can even read the emails received, as an awakening alarm.
